It’s difficult to avoid feeling a bit of déjà vu as you stand on King’s Road on a Saturday morning. The Barbour jacket was waxed. the pearls on top of a rugby shirt with stripes. The Hunter wellingtons on a person who hasn’t been in a real field in a long time. These are indicators of a certain British kind that seems to have quietly faded from cultural significance for a spell in the 1990s and 2000s. They have returned. And standing directly beside them is the person shooting it for TikTok.
In their 1982 handbook, journalist Peter York and Harpers & Queen editor Ann Barr first used the term “Sloane Ranger” to describe a very particular cultural entity: upper-middle-class, conservative, and rooted in a world that alternated between Chelsea dinner parties, country house weekends, and the occasional horse. The esthetic was initially pragmatic and then aspirational. At times, a Barbour jacket kept the rain out. You wore a pie-crust collar. In contrast to modern fashion styling, the styling was never thoughtful. Ironically, a generation who grew up witnessing everything be groomed to death found it intriguing because of this.
About five years ago, 24-year-old Scott Brown started CLJ, a Chelsea lifestyle brand. His initial goal was to test how many TikTok views he could get by exposing a part of British culture that wasn’t East London grunge or high-street trend pieces. Quite a bit, was the response. In 2025, Brown made an appearance on Tatler’s list of the most eligible bachelors, sporting snaffle loafers, white pants, and a periwinkle pullover. His argument is that the Sloane esthetic isn’t a costume just by virtue of its existence. Behind it, there is a living village that has been hidden for some time.
The connection between imitation and authenticity has changed. It was assumed in the old Sloane world that you either knew the codes from birth or you didn’t. The original handbook’s subjects would have found it both flattering and perplexing that someone in New Jersey would spend an afternoon on TikTok learning the difference between a Barbour Beadnell and a Beaufort.
However, from about 2023, a number of “old money” subgenres have emerged online, including silent luxury and what is loosely referred to as “coastal grandmother.” This is where the esthetic currently resides. The Sloane version had a very British aspect that the others do not: a certain cheery dowdiness, an appreciation of things that are wonderful because they are long-lasting rather than because they are costly.
The fashion business is keeping up with the advancements made by the internet. With tweed jackets, tennis and cricket sweaters, and knitwear adorned with brooches that resembled military regalia, Kent & Curwen’s fall 2026 collection, which debuted at Westminster School in London (the venue choice was deliberate), pushed straight into the college English posh esthetic.
In a cautious support, Peter York said, “It’s a bit of nostalgia for the old days when we really ruled the world, and I’m as happy as anyone to indulge it.” Less sentimentally, he said that Britain’s difficult economic times had historically led people to cling to romanticized representations of the past. He seems to be correct, and the Sloane renaissance is at least partially a source of solace for a generation that finds the present to be somewhat troubling.
It is actually unclear if this period would persist beyond a seasonal trend cycle. Social media-discovered fashion esthetics typically reach their pinnacle rapidly. The Sloane look is unique in that it isn’t really fashion in the first place; rather, it is a collection of durable clothing with strong cultural roots, the majority of which are designed to withstand twenty years of outdoor wear. Perhaps because of its endurance, it remains relevant longer than the algorithm anticipates. After all, a well-made Barbour jacket is always in style. Someone rediscovers it after discovering it in a Chelsea charity store and wondering what it symbolizes.
